Monica McArthur
Specializing in Art Therapy
I am a Registered Psychotherapist (Q) completing my Art Therapy thesis through the Toronto Art Therapy Institute. I am coming with over 20 years of experience working with children as a Teacher in the Peel District School Board. As a passionate art educator, I was able to see firsthand the impact the Arts can have on the individual, a community and the connections it builds. During the pandemic, I used art therapy based interventions to support my students with their mental health as we experienced collective trauma. At a time when we were distanced, it supported connection and healing. It was then I felt called to go back to school to become an Art Therapist. This new role has allowed me to combine my love of helping others with creative expression. It is holistic healing that is inclusive and empowering.
Over the years I have supported many children and families coping with self-esteem, anxiety, emotional regulation, grief, loss, depression, racial trauma, racism, divorce, LQBTQ+allyship, friendships and bullying. I am currently offering psychotherapy and art therapy services to clients age 10 and up with a specialization in working with middle school, high school, young adults, caregivers and families. I am also a passionate advocate for the integration of art therapy in educational and school settings and I regularly conduct workshops and training sessions for schools, teachers and caregivers.
In therapeutic practice, it is important for me to provide a trauma-informed, culturally sensitive and anti-oppressive lens to my work so that I can support each client to find their strengths and to help them to reach their full potential. Warmth, kindness, calm, and good humour are my strengths that help me to build genuine connections with others. My practice is rooted in the belief that art can serve as a powerful tool for self-discovery and transformation, allowing clients to express and explore feelings that are often difficult to articulate through words alone. I strive to provide a soft and safe place to share and create.
I believe in lifelong learning. I am committed to continuing my education and staying current with the latest developments in art therapy and mental health research. I integrate DBT, CBT, Solution Focused, and Narrative informed approaches into my art and talk therapy sessions. I look forward to connecting with you!
